eBay BING & GRONDAHL 1895 Christmas Plate Behind the Frozen Window is the title of the 1895 Bing and Grondahl (B&G) Christmas plate, the FIRST plate in the series – the longest running and most popular series of collector plates ever produced. This 1895 First Edition plate is the rarest and the most expensive plate in the series. It is usually considered the first true Collector Plate ever produced. It features the Copenhagen skyline with its many famous towers, seen through a window almost completely covered with frost. Across the top of the plate is the impressed inscription JULE AFTEN 1895 (Christmas Eve 1895). This plate was designed by Franz August Hallin, who also designed the B&G 1896 and 1897 Christmas plates. The scene is embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in traditional Copenhagen blue under the glaze. Diameter approximately 7 inches (17.5 cm). Pierced foot for hanging wire. Marked on the back under the glaze in green: “Danish China Works – B&G – COPENHAGEN”, a mark that was only used by B&G from 1895 to 1898. FIRST QUALITY (no scratch through the trademark) and in EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, or repairs). The plate is remarkably free from the tiny black spots (cinders), brown spots (iron particles) and polish marks (where cinders were removed) that are so common on these early plates. I’ve owned a dozen B&G 1895 Christmas Plates over the past 40 years and this is one of the best one I have ever seen, with good color and contrast.
